The hot weather in July saw us watering the most recently planted trees and soft fruit, and raking up grass that had turned into very good hay. Would anyone take this for their animals in the future? This time it had to go on the compost.
We also made the sad decision to cut the cherry tree down. It had bacterial canker, and we wanted to try to stop it spreading to the other stone fruit.
On our first evening work party, the evening light slanting through the trees made the orchard a magical place to be. We watered the newly-planted hedge trees and thinned the apples to one per cluster. This will hopefully result in a good quality crop and avoid over-taxing the trees.
